Kurt Chan was born in Hong Kong and began taking violin lessons at the age of sixteen. Chan studied Master of Music at the Royal Northern College of Music and Bachelor's of Music (Hons) at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, studying with Peter Hanson, lead violinist of the Eroica Quartet, Eyal Kless, Yair Kless and Nick Whiting, Associate Concertmaster of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. In 2003, he gained full scholarship to study on an exchange programe to the Newcastle Conservatorium, Australia, with Elizabeth Holowell, whose teacher was the great Robert Pikler. Chan has also participated in masterclasses by Marat Bisengaliev, Marianne Thorsen.
Chan has regularly performed as soloist, chamber and orchestral musician across the United Kingdom, giving concerts in the Royal Festival Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Leeds Town Hall, St. John Smith's Square and various venues. In 2005, He was invited to lead the Welsh National Opera MAX Project ensemble to given world premiere of Brian Irvine's award-winning opera, the Tailor's Daughter, at the Wales Millennium Centre receiving great acclaims. For many years, Chan has been invited to join the Dartington Festival Orchestra working with leading artists such as Sir Charles Mackerras, Paul Daniels, Karine Georgian and Diego Masson.
Since returning to Hong Kong, Chan is much sought after as violinist and educator, he performed with the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, working with Vladimir Ashkenazy, Christopher Warren-Green. Chan was invited to adjudicate for the Vocational Training Council Youth College Singing Contest (Final) in 2009. As a keen contemporary musician, he has performed at the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre giving premieres and public performances.
